President’s Message – Fall 2023
Dear patrons,
The West Point Grey Community Centre Association (WPGCCA) has been part of the West Point Grey community for over 50 years. We have been operating the West Point Grey Community Centre jointly with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation (Park Board) since 1972. In 2018, we signed a new Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) to strengthen our relationship. The WPGCCA Board appreciates our cooperative relationship with the hardworking community centre staff to bring you great programs.
The new Board of Directors have been busy since our February Annual General Meeting. We have been pleased to see the Community Centre getting back to regular programming and full operations since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. This spring we welcomed back traditional events like the 45th annual Spring Pottery Sale on May 4 and the annual Point Grey Fiesta at Trimble Park from June 21-23. The West Point Grey Community Centre has a whole host of summer camp offerings for ages 2½ to 13 that have been well attended by children with a broad range of interests.
Our West Point Grey Community Centre is now transitioning to the fall programs. We are pleased to welcome back many of our popular programs as well as introducing new ones.
For sports and fitness, we have Kickboxing, Wednesday evenings for beginners and intermediates, a high intensity aerobic workout. Pickleball Jamboree, is a larger pickleball program more suited for advanced students to learn from coaches from across Vancouver. Pickleball for Families is for youth and their parent/guardian where they can learn the basics of pickleball together and runs every Monday, Oct 16-Dec 4 from 3:45pm-5:00pm. Little Learners – Beginner Tennis for Kids is where your little ones will learn the fundamentals of tennis using modified equipment such as smaller rackets! This new program runs every Monday, Sep 7-Oct 5 from 3:30pm-4:20pm.
For the arts, we have Guitar Lessons on Wednesdays and Saturdays for beginners all the way to advance. A popular and fun evening event coming back is Paint Between the Wines at Aberthau! Our instructor, Chloe Greenberg, will help bring out your inner artist all while enjoying a complimentary glass of wine. Participants will be able to take home their creations once the event is over. Join us for a fun and artistic evening on Thursday Oct 26, Friday Nov 17, and Thursday Dec 7 from 6:00pm-8:30pm. We hope to see you there!
For dance, we are introducing two new dance programs – Beginner Contemporary and Samba! Join us in learning dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet for Contemporary Dance, running every Tuesday, Sep 12-Oct 31 from 8:00pm-9:00pm. Jump into Beginner Samba with us in November to learn the solo dance from Brazil! Join us every Tuesday, Nov 14-Dec 12 from 8:00pm-9:00pm.
We are also doing ongoing upgrades to our Community Centre facilities. Last year we upgraded the gym washrooms, showers, plumbing system, and added a new storage room. This spring, we were pleased to welcome the completion of our new playground beside the gym, just in time for the warm spring weather.
Enjoy all this season has to offer!
