Melanie’s story – How I stay active during COVID-19

Kitsilano resident and West Point Grey Community Centre patron, Melanie Hientz, shares how she is finding balance in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What activities/ programs have you participated in at West Point Grey CC?
I use the Fitness Centre at West Point Grey CC and the Lord Byng Pool in West Point Grey.

How have you adjusted your lifestyle since the start of the pandemic?
I have transitioned from working at an office to working at home, and increased virtually meetings with colleagues, friends and family. I have also increased meal-making at home, as opposed to dining out.

What are some lessons you’ve learned from transitioning to a home office?
I’ve discovered many different locations/ setups for working on the laptop and participating in Zoom meetings around the apartment. An ironing board can double as a standing desk!

What’s your go-to snack to satisfy mid-day cravings?
I love cutting up oranges and grapefruit to eat throughout the week.

What kinds of exercises or activities do you do to stay healthy and fit?
I like to do regular home workouts with weights, as well as go for runs and walks.

How do you relax and refocus during this time of uncertainty?
I try to get outside for fresh air and walks/ hikes as much as possible. I’m also doing my best to stay virtually connected with family and friends.

What apps help you manage your physical and mental wellbeing?
I use the InsightTimer app for music/ meditation and the Activity app on my Apple Watch, which captures exercise, movement and standing.

What is a mantra for staying active that you would recommend to others?
Fresh air clears the mind and feeds the soul.
