Our philosophy in the West Point Grey Preschool at Aberthau focuses on learning through play. The belief is that play is the cornerstone of Early Childhood Development and that is through play that children learn about themselves and their world. In addition to the bright inside play space, West Point Grey Preschool offers an outdoor classroom as part of the learning environment. Young children need unstructured outdoor play periods in a nature based setting to encourage their understanding and respect for nature. The outdoor classroom can provide areas for hands-on exploration and discovery, physical activity, social bonding and dramatic play.
In the classroom, you can find the children participating in the following activities and learning the following skills:
- Science – experiments and exploration
- Math – counting and building
- Music – singing, dancing, movement & instruments
- Circle Time – stories, calendar, songs & themes
- Show and Tell – sharing, public speaking & confidence building
- Art
- Cooking and Baking
- The Alphabet
- Family Fun Phonics Program (4 year old class)
All of these areas promote learning through new discoveries, new language and new experiences.
The location of the West Point Grey Preschool is unique from many other Preschools in the area. It is located in a bright room known as the Conservatory surrounded by windows and the Dining Room. The grounds of West Point Grey allow for gym time, adventurous walks to the beach and to the pond to feed the ducks, the gardens and the playground. We are also able to intimately observe seasonal changes and day-to-day changes in the surrounding gardens, as well as observe up close-up some of the wildlife, i.e. birds and squirrels.
Our Preschool Teachers are Miranda Tagliafierro and Alissa Reder.
