The West Point Grey Community Association is organizing “Lane Treasures Days”, a weekend in which residents of the community will be encouraged to put unwanted, reusable items, such as furniture and household items, in the lane or by the curb of their homes in hopes that they will be picked up for reuse by a UBC student or neighbour.
The event is truly a win- win. For the local resident it is an easy and inexpensive way to get rid of unwanted items, especially those too large to put out for collection, without the cost or hassle of driving them to the transfer station or a donations venue; for students and other lucky residents who find just what they need on the street for absolutely nothing, it’s a windfall; and for all of us it means less stuff in our landfall. Toronto and Montreal have similar weekend events focused around students at their respective universities.
This year the area of focus will be West Point Grey defined as west of Alma and north of West 16th, but it is hoped that in further years, other communities will come on board and that the event will become more city-wide. Please remember do not block lanes, no mattresses and it the homeowner’s responsibility to dispose of any uncollected items after the weekend.
